Western Railroad Discussion > Sand-hills Pan action

I have always been in awe of "Pan" shots but have only attempted a few times.   My son and I were out in the Sand-hills of Nebraska a few years ago and decided to give it a try.  These are both hand held shots and I was pretty happy with the results.  Wondering what technique others use to achieve better results?  I now carry a mono-pod in my camera bag which should help tremendously.   Unfortunately, I usually go train watching by myself.
