This old white-beard miner kept getting in front of my camera today.  No matter what I tried, I just couldn't shake him.  However, in the attached image he is doing a pretty good job of framing one big frigging crack in the ground a couple miles south of Trona Pinnacles.  I paced off five feet of offset over a zone about 25 feet wide; the imaged crack was about the biggest I found.  And, yup, that's fresh ballast on the Trona Railroad grade there in the background - they've worked most of the kink out, but still have the line closed and a whole lotta fix-all equipment staged at Kelly's Crossing (if I got the name right).  I didn't make it all the way to the mill, but I can say that the feather of venting process steam that usually crowns the place was not in evidence today.  Hopefully their repairs are coming along.

* Edit * added a photo looking along the track showing the kink the quake made in the alignment.  The track crosses the fault break just about at the point of tangency for a curve (behind me in the photo), so some of the bending of the rails is from the transition to the curve, and some of it is from the movement on the fault.

Dang white beard miners!

After all the posts about the Trona RR here, what with the earth quake causing a lot of damage now in the town of Trona.

Sure did not crack a smile.

Well, most railbuffs do— esp when kneeling down for that “once in a lifetime photo” of the Big Boy in action— a major “crack” problem, lol

Is the equipment stored on the Navy spurs off of Randsburg Wash Rd?  If so, then I believe the sign says "Nichols Crossing".

Here are some photos showing the displacement on the fault line where it crosses Pinnacles Road.  I paced it off at around 5 feet of offset.  The hole in the ground looks like it is 4 feet deep, but you know that crack continues down into the planet a couple of miles.  Spooky stuff!

Visit the escarpment of the 1872 Lone Pine quake sometime.

If my property bordered the road, do I now have a kink in my property boundary at the fault offset?  If it was a strike-slip fault, where one plate rides up over the other, someone loses some property?

Did anyone file an eis before dumping the dirt in the road to fill in the fault?

Oh, it is natural fill from an after shock, just nature taking care of itself.
