Kind of a misleading symbol. O is for ore. But also used for oil. CA is for Cawelo, the 2nd siding north of Bakersfield. But the train really has nothing to do with Cawelo and is actually unloaded on the SJVR ex-Sunset Railway trackage southwest of Bakersfield. The SJVR brings the train to Saco (1st siding north og Bakersfield) and gives it to the UP. Don't know what the PF stands for in Omaha's mind, but the train goes to Eastport, ID and is interchanged to the CP.

Nice pictures,

One question, why did the power have to “wye”?  If the UP PTC worked on the Fresno Sub why could it not lead on the Valley Sub? Unless there’s another reason, seems like extra work for nothing.

To get a cab signal equipped leader.

Almost every one of these oil trains comes south with a single UP unit on the point followed by CP, BNSF, and other non-UP units trailing. When the train is empty it moves north to Roseville with whatever unit happens to be facing north in the consist. At Roseville they will wye the power to get the UP unit back on the point for cab signals that are needed east of Portand.

Ok, that makes sense.  Thanks for the info.
