Western Railroad Discussion > Restored SP KM 9010 Today In Niles Canyon

The Pacific Locomotive Association ran a special today to celebrate the restoration of SP 9010.
Although the KM was being pusted by restored SP GP9 5623, the locomotive looked great and all in
the Canyon with their cameras, seemed to have a great time. We expect to have 9010 running 
under it's own power sometime in 2020.

The KM's were common power seen on the SP in Niles Canyon. The final photo shows a westbound KM
powered freight at Farwell in 1966.

Who'da think just a few years ago... that 50+ years after these beasts roamed the rails, there'd still be one right back at home where it belongs. Almost as incredible as seeing a fired Big-Boy in 2019!

The 9010 looks mighty fine. Glad to see that she is running with her Mars light on, which adds to her appearance.

Many thanks for posting- great photos.
Awesome work on the restoration of SP KM 9010. 
We saw it several years ago on a special tour with the late Henry Luna,
when the restoration was just getting underway.
Will be great when that Maybach can be fired up again.

The second image has the scarlet and gray KM, black widow GP9, gray economy baggage, and the silver/red final passenger scheme.

If you substituted an SDP45 on the point, that train would have been a good approximation of the last days of mail trains 20/21 across Nevada circa 1967.

great to see a truley oddball unit restored.   I love F units and GP-9's,  but try to find a restored and operating FM, Baldwin or Lima road unit anywhere.  Not many, and dont know there are any more left that could be restored....

Really glad it was saved.  Looks great... too bad a DL109 was not saved or a New Haven EP5 Jet.
