Western Railroad Discussion > A couple of goodies on otherwise light 3-day weekendDate: 09/06/19 23:10 A couple of goodies on otherwise light 3-day weekend Author: oyw Now that almost a week has passed, here is a recap of a very slow 3-day weekend in the Cajon/Riverside area. Fortunately a BNSF SD70ACe and NS leader saved what would have been a terrible weekend, on with the story. Saturday, August 31 started out with promise when I heard BNSF SD70ACe 8413 leaving San Bernardino with an eastbound heading up Cajon.
1) The tracks had been lit for less than 5 minutes when the train came into view at the Swarthout Road crossing in Blue Cut. 2) The 8413 going-away from the same location. Thinking an easy chase would follow, the train soon came to a halt at Cajon. I then heard on the radio there was a trespasser strike near Lugo causing the delay, unfortunately it was fatal. 3) After about an hour, Amtrak #3 was the next train through Cajon on Main track 3. Date: 09/06/19 23:13 Re: A couple of goodies on otherwise light 3-day weekend Author: oyw 4) After #3, I decided to take a look at the lighting on the straight-away between Cajon and Sullivan’s Curve, still too soon for good nose light but I waited anyway. 9:58AM, exactly two hours after the Blue Cut shot, the 8413 was finally on the move.
I thought I would take it easy on the vehicle Sunday morning, heading over to Riverside. What a terribly show morning it was. After seeing a nondescript UP stack train around 7AM, other than Metrolink, I saw nothing else up to 9:45 when I left. 5) Thanks goodness for Metrolink. Endangered F59PH 857 pushes a four car train #751 on to LAUPT at West Riverside. 6) A couple of hours later, “white-stripe” F-125 921 is Oceanside bound with train #859. Date: 09/06/19 23:15 Re: A couple of goodies on otherwise light 3-day weekend Author: oyw After the two slow mornings, I had no intentions of going out on Monday but a call from a friend caused a change in plans. The westbound BNSF QNYCLAC lost its lead unit BNSF 4462 (I think was the number) due to a blown turbo, causing it to be set out at Summit. The only other two units were both NS so they decided to finish the run to LA as is, NS power leading on the BNSF in SoCal these days is practically unheard of. The only problem, clouds were everywhere which meant sucker-holes would be our only hope, luckily a few opened up.
7) By the time the train got moving, it was after 8AM. The first try was at Gish on Main track 3 as NS Tier-4 GE 3648 and AC44C6M rebuild 4081 make their way over old Route 66. 8) A broadside shot from Cajon Blvd at Blue Cut. 9) And finally, the standard shot down at the flour mill near Verdemont. So much for staying home but it was a good end to a very slow 3-day weekend. Thanks for looking. I agree with you about the cloud cover, but that had drawn me out to the Pass that day.
Seems I chose to set up about a half mile away from all these locations that you have posted. Steve Date: 09/07/19 05:35 Re: A couple of goodies on otherwise light 3-day weekend Author: bmarti7 Nice bunch-great variety.
