A train derailed in Dupo IL today. Lots of fire from the tank cars and a string of fire not even near the derailment. Guessing this is Union Pacific

Looks like some speed was invloved. That one empty hopper looks like a crumpled up soda can.  Apparently whatever spilled out of the tankcar(s) found it's way down a drain and culvert before catching fire.

Reported 16 cars on the ground.  The report says they were "building the rain."  It seems like an awful bunch of cars off of the rails and a long trail of fire for a yard speed train.  Of course,  the incident happened a little over an hour ago and the first reports are often full of errors.

That almost looks like a cut of cars that was being pushed when it derailed. Perhaps the train was backing up to make a double. That would explain how that one covered hopper got crumpled in the center. And if the crew was pushing on a derailment and didn't know it, or the track is on a slight grade, that could explain the fire trail.

Watch the 1 hr 35 minute video at the link. The flaming liquid from the tank car moves down a drainage ditch and then makes a 90 degree turn into a long underground culvert under the property exploding in flames at the outlet several hundred feet away. Pretty spectacular then you realize that the final destination is a storm-water detention basin so nothing goes further offsite.

A tank full of solvent and some Carbon Black burns as dark as a Mogadishu tire fire.

pushing on a derailed car makes perfect sense. 

I was working in a yard once, when a crew with a single engine and a cut of loads was having trouble making it up a short, steep grade (what we called "the ramp')  It was raining, and the engine wheels were slipping.  So the yardmaster had another crew hook on the front of this train to get it up the hill.  a minute or so after they started pulling, the air dumped, and the yardmaster jumped up and immediately knen the train was on the ground.  100' of rail ripped up, but all the cars still standing....
