On September 21, as part of the ongoing centennial celebration of Grand Canyon National Park, the Grand Canyon Railway, BNSF Railway, Grand Canyon National Park and NPS-Trails & Rails will recognize the significant contribution that railroading (and specifically the Santa Fe and Fred Harvey) made to the development of the South Rim.  Three trains will operate, a steam double header, a diesel powered train, and a BNSF private train.

Santa Fe produced many, many brochures, folders, timetable ads and blotters over the years promoting the Grand Canyon, and the Fred Harvey Company did the same.  Their promotion was of course to drive traffic to the Canyon, so not entirely altruistic, but they did a fine job of making a large number of Americans aware of the West and provided an ideal transportation resource from which to view the scenery.  For many years, Santa Fe was quite proud of their claim that they were "... the only railroad to Grand Canyon National Park.  This is the cover of a 1928 brochure.  Santa Fe passenger service became seasonal (May-September) in 1955, and the last Santa Fe revenue passenger train departed Grand Canyon station on July 30, 1968.

If they decide to use other frequenices, we can see about getting them added to the scanner for the event.

One thing that would be helpful when people post railroad frequencies is to include the AAR channel nos. in addition to the frequencies.  The reason is that railroaders almost NEVER refer to a radio channel by its frequency, so when a Dispatcher or train crew member says, "Go to channel  021 021,"  a railfan will know that means 160.4250 mHz.  By the way, using the three digit AAR channel designation and 4 digits to the right of the decimal for the frequency is the correct way to refer to narrow band analog channels.  I have added the AAR channel nos. to the quote above in bold.  For the uninitiated, the first 3 digits of the AAR channel no. refer to the transmit frequency, the second set refers to the receive frequency.  One other note:  DPD Productions produced a list of the all of the AAR channel designations some years back that they later updated.  Beware!--the updated DP Productions list currently available on the internet contains a big error: the analog channels after Channel 089 are incorrect.
