Yep, that's how they leave the auto facility at Mira Loma, CA. Empty racks going back for more.

Just as PHall stated, the Mira Loma that goes through AZ on the UP is the 1x1 Eastbound Reposition. Then there is the common 2x1 Westbound Loaded.

BNSF frequently sets auto trains up coming to Big Lift south of Denver they would be set up 1 x 1 so the conductor could ride the pont of the shove backing into the auto lot. Hard to ride the side of an auto rack in bad weather for a distance of close to a mile.

DP everything. It's the Salt n Pepa Doctrine: Ah, push it, push it real good.

Autoracks ran with DPU's on the Golden State route too, now not so much. Probably didn't affect much but an autorack train coming out of a siding always had couplers in the rear portion jammed to the side due to compression through the switch.
The Arrow Wedges are apparently gone, always thought that was such a miniscule savings on fuel and it was assinine to begin with. Never could prove much as no train or condition was ever the same as another. WAG !
Now trains are over siding capacity and the really heavy/long ones struggle along at 35 to 40 mph. Drag up the hills at under 10 mph.

But not my stuff, I only watch.
