BNSF rail train using Slab steel cars, things went south quick
Author: czuleget

Did anyone see the train carrying rail on the slab steel cars where they dumped the load. It was loaded 4 rails high and looked to be the 1/4mile long sections. It could have been in Mexico where they were attempting to unload the rail using a number of heavy duty forklifts. Well it went all wrong, real fast dumping the load of rail and flipping over the train in the same event. One of the cars number was BNSF 929151  I had seen this on Face Book tonight. Not sure when it happened or where exactly.

How would you even secure the rail? There's no racks or anything else.

The slab steel cars have vertical pillars at each end of the car on both sides they have no end on them. The SP Would use Bulk head flat cars for Slab steel service,  its not like the old SP and later SF says when they would use flat cars.  By the way I poseted the car number so if anyone ca trace the car it may show its current status,

I think Tony is talking about this video.  The fun starts at the 1:35 mark.

Kinda sorta reminds me of a 5 unit articulated ‘rail’ car I saw in Los Angeles earlier this year. Though the one I saw (BNSF 919905) had different apparatus for securing ribbon rail in lengths around 250’ I believe?

If the YouTube video linked above is indeed the original poster’s car in question... I can’t imagine they were lifting 1320’ of rail. That would be madness, requiring dozens of forklifts. And near impossible coordination between all the bozos involved.

I don't think those were quarter-mile pieces of rail, but it looks like railroads are sourcing rails longer than 80' for welding. Here is an old article on UP's use of long rails:

I am pretty sure those are 80' rails loaded on an 89' flat car equipped to haul 80' rail sections. The steel mill in Pueblo, CO had a number of cars equipped as the one seen on the video with their C&W reporting mark. I am not sure if this is in Mexico I could hear some gringos talking.

As a retired forklift driver I could only shout "Tilt back, TILT BACK!!!"

Why did they try to pick all four layers? They might of gotten away with it if they had gone for one layer of rail at a time, maybe...

These cars are loaded and normally unloaded using a spreader bar with rail dogs or clamps or a magnetic system to lif on layer at a time and are not made for using forklifts

Epic pedejadas! Seems like nobody was injured, so that's great. But damn, I'm glad I wasn't part of that mess, lol.

I thought the same thing. Probably would not have made that much difference, but more tilt back on the mast may have made the outcome a bit better perhaps. Ben

Cast?  I thought rolling from billets was the industry standard.
