Green River on Evanston sub of UP's Overland Route...I wonder if the original line in 1869 was cut this deep...hard for me to believe that...The Steam fans chasing 4014 will be all over this nice bridge...desolate and fairly new and wide...SHM

From what I can gather, the original line ran parallel and just to the south of the current line at your photo location. If you stand on the bridge and look east & west you can see the edges of (what I believe to be) the original cut, along the southern edge of the current cut. Looks like you can see some of the southern edge of the original cut in your photo, immediately to the right of the greenish structure. I think that slope was the southern edge of the original cut, with the northern edge eliminated when they did the excavating for the 1908 realignment that the train is using. I-80 was not there and we stopped at a sort of pullout area where the road and US 30 intersected. While Grandma made lunch in the small travel trailer we walked over to the bridge and watched several of the UP Domeliners pass beneath us. I believe the center passing track was still in place. A memory I will never forget.
