Western Railroad Discussion > Sunday morning in Perris with Thomas, Percy and Metrolink

 Last Sunday (November 3) a couple of friends and I spent the morning down at the Orange Empire Museum in Perris (CA). The reason for our visit was Thomas and Friends were back in town for the next couple of weekends and the museum normally provides some of its finest power for these trains. Sundays trains had Santa Fe FP45 108 with Thomas and recently restored SP SW1 1006 with Percy. The newly added Metrolink weekend service on the Perris Valley Line added some extra interest as well, here’s a short report from our morning.

1) Thanks to an extra hour of light due to the time change, I was able to photograph Metrolink train 751 at the River Crest grade crossing near the Moreno Valley/ March Field station. Seen in the distance, F125 920 in push-mode will soon enter Box Springs Canyon.

2) Less than hour later, we waited in downtown Perris for train 753 with tattered F59PHI 887 for power.

3) On museum trackage, ATSF 108 pushes the northbound 9AM Thomas train near Ellis Ave.

4) Following Thomas was the 3 car Percy train powered by recently restored SW1 SP 1006.

6) Percy train going away, I’ll spare the jokes about Percy providing more smoke than the Big Boy did during its recent SoCal visit.

7) On the 10AM run, the 108 is stopped at 7th St. On the left, the historic Perris depot can be seen in the distance.

Before going home we got a nice bonus, finding SP U25B 3100 parked at the south end of the property.

The last two shots are of the 3100 taken at different angles and focal lengths.

As usual, many thanks go out to the hard working folks at the museum for another dynamite show. The attendance looked to be strong, better than I’ve seen in a while.

Whoever at that museum that is responsible for painting the equipment does impeccable work. Every time I see a pic on here of ATSF 108 or SP 1006, I'm amazed at the professional looking quality of those paint jobs. Looks like they rolled right off the factory floor. Hope I'm able to check it out in person some day.

Nice set!  Especially the SF big "F" and the SP Uboat.  Sharp looking engines for sure.

The 1006 was contracted out to the same contractor who does paint for Metrolink

Some nice shots, since I was part of bringing the first car to Perris, it had come a long ways..

But do not rush out to the museum until January 2020.

Notice to members=16pxSouthern California Railway Museum is hosting Polar Express and beginning Tuesday, November 12th, we will be open for Polar Express ONLY. Museum access will be limited to members that are working on our collections. All other museum areas will be unavailable.=16pxDaily visitors and guests will be welcomed back beginning January 1st, 2020. Trolley service will resume on January 4th, 2020.
 

Nice shots, especially considering how crowded it must have been.  (Looks like Thomas should spend some time with that painting contractor.)

Great photos and lighting Bob.  I'll have to check out the River Crest grade crossing with the regular weekend Metrolink service now.
