One to pick up at Lubrizol
Author: bakersfielddave

Last wednesday i was driving through Tehachapi and spotted a set of Lite power coming west around 930 am

they switched into the Lubrizol warehouse, picked up a tank car then ran around it and returned towards Monolith

they picked up some hoppers there and a few hours later i saw them in the Canyon near Cameron

OK, so at the end, the train was 16 cars.  Figuring 125 tons per car, that 4 hp per ton.

Question to engineers:  could that train have been safely handled by only 1 of those SD-70ACe's?  If so, it would be 2 hp / ton.  And would the dynamics of 1 unit be enough to hold that train at speed going downhill into Mojave?

Obviously, I'm indirectly asking why UP sent 2 units....when in steam days, 1 engine would have done the work....and without dynamics!

If you use one unit you will be backing in one direction. Backing all the way from Tehachapi back to Mojave does not sound like a fun way to spend your day.
