Western Railroad Discussion > Suppertime for the 4014Date: 11/30/19 02:29 Suppertime for the 4014 Author: santafe199 Don’t these folks know it’s suppertime? The crewmen on UP’s 4014 certainly do. A nice meal somewhere, a good night’s rest and they’ll be back out here in less than 12 hours getting ready for the next leg to Hays…
1. UP’s 4014 Big Boy + psgr car ensemble is parked on the ex-Santa Fe track at the former Salina Union Depot in Salina, KS. The string of accompanying hoppers was left on the east side of the 12th St crossing, where this shot was taken from. For the last few decades this recently evacuated passenger terminal building was the on/off duty point for UP road crews. Photo date: November 20, 2019. Thanks for looking! Can't remember what year I stood just north (right) of your image talking to a CMO waiting for a mixed EB to arrive, so he could restart a dead 1400 (SDP35?). Good times at Salina, Kansas. Thanks for the flashback.

Yeah, that was the finale of an incredibly strange, bad luck day. It started with a great sunrise in Topeka. Then in true Kansas fashion the weather immediately became moderate to crappy overcast. I did get some very thin sunshine at St George, and then bad luck hit. I didn't catch up with the 4014 again until it was arriving in Salina in the now heavy overcast. But when it comes to weather in Kansas, never say never. Right before sunset in Salina the clouds decided to give everyone a little teaser of sunshine. Thus the photo you see above. This was one of the weirdest days I've ever had as a railfan... Lance/199 Date: 11/30/19 14:19 Re: Suppertime for the 4014 Author: Atsf814 Gotta agree with others. Looks like a drawing and is a great photo. Feels a bit nostalgic! Thanks for sharing!
