4014 on the KP: Home Turf
Author: mg8711

With vacation time at my disposal, I made good use of 3 days of it with UP 4014 running over the KP, burning up all but 1 day I had left. For the first day I went to a familiar location, Airport Road east of Wamego given the sun was shining, the train was westbound, and pacers would be pacers. I'd chase the train to Ike Siding west of Abilene, before having to go back to Manhattan. I never thought I'd see this thing in my normal stomping grounds...

1)  Rolling into view an hour later at 10AM, UP 4014 brings with  it a long line of pacers on parallel US 24 east of Wamego.
2) The closest I'd been to a Big Boy is Interstate 80 in Omaha passing the hill one is displayed at, a roster shot shows just how Big this thing is.
3) Pacers being pacers, and choosing a poor route through Wamego, I wouldn't get ahead of the 4014 again until after the service stop at Manhattan, here it is leaving town at Pecan Circle.

4) West of Manhattan at 56th Avenue, another go to spot, UP 4014 passes the Manhattan Regional Airport, everything was business as usual for this shot, except for the 50 other people up here with me.
5) The service stop at Junction City complete, UP 4014 and train had to literally be walked away from its stop by police officers and crew members, The dim DPU headlight in the distance is that of UP 2010, the Boy Scout unit on a dead grain train.
6) West of town, the 4014 passes the former station of Kansas Falls.

7-9) I wasn't able to get the train once again until after the service stop at Abilene, here the 4014 shows off its articulation through the S curve just east of Ike Siding. I'd call it a day and go grab lunch after this but...

10) BNSF wanted to interrupt my lunch, with an eastbound Concordia, KS grain load, rolling past the depot at Abilene...
11) Climbing the hill out of Enterprise...
12) ...and rounding a curve south, timetable east of Navarre, KS.

Great set of photos, I'd say you did really well with the 4014.

Nice set Lucas.  The curves at Sand Spring/Ike are a nice location.
