a bit OT... but begging for a caption!
Author: santafe199

It’s amazing how much fun a railfan can have shooting pictures, with nary a train in sight! Here’s spot along the ex-Rock Island main line in greater downtown Vona, CO. Image #2 is the view one gets when visiting the er…… umm………… business establishment pictured in image #1. This ancient elevator was served by countless Rock Island trains, but now sits apparently inert directly across US hwy 24 from the also apparently inert (are you ready for this?) “OASIS” service. (no foolin’)

I assume the sign means service station, as in working gas pumps & so forth. But I’m hanged if I can spot any evidence of recent service having been delivered here. So I’m thinking some of you more clever ‘caption thinker-upperers’ here on TO might like to have a go at this one…

1. Oasis Service station (???) in Vona, CO on November 27, 2019. I seriously doubt that free Wi-Fi is available here…

2. Right across Highway 24 is this view of an old elevator once served by the Rock Island. Today KYLE runs by here with their regional railroad service…

Thanks for looking back & forth across the highway!

Another day KYLE wasn't running trains. Tied down at Vona. 2016.

I'm guessing they don't use dynamics much around there.

I would suggest that anytime one sees mechanical driven gas pumps vice the typical electronic versions would imply that they (the pumps) are probably not in service anymore.  The mechanical works simply couldn't keep up with the increase in fuel prices over the years......the mechanisms simply wore out.  And it wasn't worth repairing them to function in the here and the now.

(That said, I frequent a Mom and Pop convenience store that has mechanical pumps and sells ethanol free gas.....exactly what I need for my generator.  I shudder to think how far I will have to drive in the future if they close up shop to obtain the same product.)

Lance, in your last photo with the snow covered SP9330 I'm trying to discern if that's a pick and its handle near the snowed pilot.  Just wondering if the snow was that crusty or whether I'm missing what this article is.

This photo with the elevator is also a bit different.  It appears a modification in later years gained it a higher elevation for the grain with the higher doghouse and distribution tubes.  Probably an upgrade that may have provided a more fast and forceable loading of old Rock Island boxcars.  Looks like this elevator bit the dirt many years ago, but the scales and office are still used, but grain goes to the newer bin complex beyond the old elevator.

I'd say that it's a pickaxe, commonly used to pick the ice out of switches and grade crossing flangeways.

The last 3 photos were posted by "SD45X", a man of very, very few words. ;^). I would suggest asking him...
