An empty northbound oil train pulled into Shedd siding this morning jsut before 11 am.  Up to that point, It was a blustery Winter day with a light snowfall in the hills to our east and west.  A southbound loaded train had been spotted by a friend going through Salem a little earlier and, with luck, it would be the first through Shedd with the second train being the morning southbound Amtrak Cascades.  And the sun came out! It seems like there were more CP units here than UP, including the DPU on the south loaded train.

When living in Eugene, Shedd was on my LTL truck route--the "99" route, as dispatch called it.  The route went through all the old, little towns on old US Route 99, up to Albany.

Shedd is a great little town--very cute, some nice homes there, and a historical flour mill nearby that ran on river water flow.

Shedd is the warehouse center of the huge lawn seed growing business in the Willamette Valley--literally tons and tons and tons of lawn seed are harvested up there from enormous fields of "lawn" grown by the farmers.  We'd pick up entire trailer loads of palletized lawn seed for shipment to all points.

Shedd also has a great little general store that also has a deli counter, and serves as the town "meeting point."  Walk in, and people are there, talking and catching up.  Very, very down home.  I always loved stopping at Shedd.  If you get a chance, stop by, too.

I totally agree. That "99" run is rural Americanna. Kind of a "Granger" feel?  When I lived/worked around there in the later 80s the same general lifestyles existed.
