Old Santa Fe caboose on the rear of BNSF local in Kansas
Author: JoCoLB

It's been a long time since folks in the Gardner, Kan.,AREA hAve witnessed a former ATSF Railway caboose during main line action on the BNSF Railway's transcon route.

That chANged today, Friday, Jan. 24, 2020,, when former ATSF Railway caboose NO. 101 was removed from the New Century AirCenter industrial park switch yard. No. 101 has been stored on the New Century premises for at least 10-plus years.

I shot this video at 4:10 p.m. as the eastbound BNSF 123 Job (local) was heading east about 1-1/2 miles east of Gardner. The train was headed to Kansas City, Kan.  An informant says the caboose will be taken somewhere in Wyoming but i still do not have details.

Looks like it was sold to a private entitity (JFSX reporting mark).

JFSX is the reporting mark for JFS Railcar company.

I'm impressed they were willing to move it.

A "friend of a friend" reports that BNSF is showing the waycar as billed to "Tiger Transfer in Upton WY".

Upton is a town of only about 1,100 in northeastern Wyoming. Wonder what will happen to it when it gets there? My understanding is that it was still in the Argentine, KS, switch yard today (Saturday)

If  you search for Tiger Transfer, Wyoming on "that video site", a nice 8+ minute promotional video for the big transload facility adjacent to the BNSF mainline there can be found.  As to why they'd want an ex-ATSF waycar, your guess is probably better than mine!

Likely the transfer point to the road. Odds are someone in the area bought it from JFS.

Trainorders is trying to compete with youtube, or there is some other technical reason why TO does not allow YT links.

It's perfectly OK to name other sites.

From what I hear on the audio, that seemingly well-preserved ATSF caboose is dragging one or more of it's wheelsets, and will need a couple; or more, of it's brake shoes replaced if it will be brought back to active duty.

Judging from the fire damage visable on the exterior, it will need a lot more than that (probably a completely new interior and maybe some structural repairs).

Eric -

I thought at first that there was fire damage on the right side of the ATSF crummy, but on further review it appears that the paint has just been damaged by weather and time. I am sure that the interior is probably filled with crap (no pun = rodent crap) and it will need a completely new interior. For sure, some new appliances and/or structural repair.
