UP train with 76 70-ton boxcars in a row
Author: inCHI

Just came across a train on the Texarkana, TX camera at 8:07am CT that was headed northeast. The first 76 cars behind the power are all 70-ton 50' boxcars, mostly TTX, BKTY, and NS. After that, there is one tank car and about 30 autoracks. I recall some discussions of a UP train with a lot of 50' 70-ton boxes cars (I saw something like that in El Paso, TX) but 76 in a row is practically a unit train. Does anyone know what train it is, and where so many are being loaded at?

I would like to know as well.   Seen that train a number of times, I've counted over 100 boxcars on it before.   Beer train, maybe?

Im guessing it is beer out of Mexico headed for the Chicago distributors.  After all we have the Superbowl coming up.  Big beer drinking affair!

Any product being marketed for the Super Bowl should already be on retailers' shelves.

Interesting topic, the Eugene train just went through Dunsmuir with 8 beer cars on the head end.

Actually quite a sight, 3 UP locomotives, a CP, CN then two more CP, a bunch of cement cars, then beer cars, then some LP cars, even some empty Oil cars in there. Very identifiable destination, sort of. Oops, they just slipped out on the wet rail north of town, at least they have supplies.

+ radio says the lead unit is a DC locomotive, the wheel slip was read by the PTC as overspeed, it tried to slow the train down. Trailing Canadian locomotives are heading home without MU cables. Sounds like Miller time.

Noticed a bunch of single door Tboxes as well.

UP brought a large number of BKTY boxcars to storage on the Coast line within the past couple of weeks. Builders dates on all were 1977-1979, and they come from a wide variety of previous owners. About half (28-30) are stored on the siding in San Luis Obispo, the other half at Bromella siding north of Guadalupe. I keep reading of cars coming out of storage, but every siding on the Coast is stuffed with cars of one kind or another. Of course, since there are no freight trains, sidings here are mostly redundant now.

There are 50 some odd boxes now at SLO and I got wind that they are going to grab another string at Sudden siding on Tuesday evening. I was told it wouldn’t be the Guadalupe GP power it would be road power if they could get it. Light power from Oakland or maybe drug north on the GUAD? We will see.

makes me think even more that there is a lot of Mexican beer on that train.  Maybe to REPLENISH all the stock now being sold.  Is that better Toldedopatch?

I would agree the 76 boxcars are full of beer (Corona, Modelo, ect) brewed at the Constellation Brands brewery in Nava, Coahuila, Mexico.   It is the worlds largest. and its on the Ferromex mainline between Piedras Negras (Eagle Pass) and Ciudad Frontera, Coahuila.

UP/FXE also haul glass bottles to the brewery.

Thanks for all of the info! That is impressive, if UP didn't have to make everything 10,000 ft. plus this would be a beer unit train.

Also, looking up video of "Nava Brewery Expansion Progress" seems to confirm these are beer cars. The video shows dozens of the cars at the brewery, and even two Constellation Brands black GP40-2's switching them.

Today's version, visible at 10:00 CT, was also interesting. It has to be carrying more box cars than any other train in the country. Does this train get worked anywhere once it crosses the border at Eagle Pass, or is it all Mexican traffic?

Today's was 2+1+1, 161 cars, and I'm estimating 11,400 ft.
