This is how we do dirt in Utah
Author: 2ebright

About a week ago I was suffering a bad case of mid-winter cabin fever. The sure cure for this malady is a day or two of train watching and photography. So, net day, I took off for the Helper-Soldier Summit area to see what was running. The Dirt Train was what was running; unusual because was a Sunday. I dinked around for a while in Helper until the train left and then raced east to Wellington Canyon, where I blew a really good shot. Typical senior citizen mistake; I forgot to turn the camera on. Then it was up the gravel road to Mounds and then more or less following Grassy Trail Creek to where the UP tracks cross said creek. I spent several hours with the Dirt Train this day; 4 pictures below.1. In my opinion, the best shot of the day as the train crosses thje bridge over Grassy Trail Cr.       2.    Dirt Train getting underway on the steep grade after stopping to let the Conductor line the derail. At the west end of the ECDC yard In East Carbon, Utah.

3.  After spotting the loads and picking up empties it's back down the branch.

One more shot below

Following Grassy Trail Cr. again through the "heavily forested" Utah desert towards the mainline connection at Mounds.. That snow covered ridge in the background is just under 10,000' elevation: it's high point is Bruin Point (el. 10,183) just right of top center.

thanks for looking.

Nice group of shots, amazing that the UP lowers itself to handle such traffic.

Probably better then hauling by truck. I'm thinking this stuff is contaminated soil from EPA sites?

Among other places. Some of this comes from Pier 96 in San Francisco.

Great shots Dick, beautiful light, scenery and compositions.

Your senior moment made me laugh... I've 'been there' more than once!
