Western Railroad Discussion > In memory of Stockton TowerDate: 02/12/20 10:13 In memory of Stockton Tower Author: The-late-EMD Wouldn't that little patch of land where the tower use to be, be a great spot for a railroad park with viewing platforms, bathrooms and even a roach coach or two. When I was there several months ago a U.P. special agent politely told me I was trespassing in go park on the street. Today it's a filthy homeless encampment with not a U.P. or BNSF cop insight. It's a great place to watch amtrak, u.p. BNSF and tons of foreign power roll by 24/7. I don't get the railroads, they chase us foamers off but they let the homeless and ghetto artist take over the right of way. So I say we start a petition asking U.P. and BNSF and the city of Stockton to dedicate that little 2 acres of land to the railfan community. It can be our west coast horseshoe curve park.

When you're finished writing up the petition, post it here so others can have access to it. I don't think the lifestyle of the homeless is one of choice.

Amen to that (and contrary to what some have asserted here, not ALL the homeless are crazy and dangerous... of course, some are.. but there are crazy and dangerous people in all walks of life) The NY Times has been running an occasional series of articles about the homeless encampments around Oakland CA and how there's quite a few "there but for the grace of God go I" types living there - people whose homes were burned in the wildfires or who lost their jobs and had no savings and were out on the streets. It's shocking and sad and horrifying that this happens so frequently in one of the wealthiest parts of one of the wealthiest states of one of the wealthiest countries on earth. So don't assume "they're all crazy and dangerous" just because they're homeless - many of those folks are just like you and me, just a hell of a lot unluckier. As for the idea suggested by the original poster, I think it's fantastic, and I'd suggest that the best way to get something started is to approach the mayor and/or city council members in Stockton with the idea. (No petition needed.. just a few phone calls, a lot of courtesy and enthusiasm.. and it wouldn't hurt to have a list of reasons why it would be beneficial to the City of Stockton handy to read to them - be sure to include a list of other places where this kind of thing has been done. That area is certainly "blighted", and something like this might be just the thing they're looking for to start turning the area around. Be sure to post here again to let us know how they responded - maybe a few other TO folks will be inspired to make a few phone calls supporting the idea as well.. ) Good luck! Another cause of homelessness is workers being severely injured (including, ironically a workplace injury) or coming down with a dehabilitating illness. While it's not acknowledged on Trainorders, there are also people who work low-paying jobs which do not pay enough to provide income to buy or rent a living space. Date: 02/13/20 22:29 Re: In memory of Stockton Tower Author: mukinduri I endorse the idea of the City of Stockton making a railfan park. This location is the best in the Bay Area as far as number of trains is concerned. It's too bad there is no comfortabe place to hang out.
The only other comparable place I know of is in Saramento, just east of the Amtrak station. There is a comfortable pergola to shelter in, but it's a heck of a long drive from Oakland. |
