Here we have 4247 sitting in the hole while 4901 passes on track 3 at Cozy Dell in the Cajon Pass. Now PhotoBob has his own memorial tree (waiting  for him to croak) right above the cab on 4247. Now he can't say we don't have trees down here cuz here's the proof.

I got into a fight with BN over superelevation when the Talgo trains were introduced. BNSF engineering folks insisted that the tilting capabilities of Talgo trains be used to maintain the same speed and reduce superelevation to match. I told them that doing so would violate their contract with Amtrak by reducing the level of utility of the Coast Starlight, which would be required to operate at less than current speed through curves. There was some (understatement) argument and some wanting to know whow I knew that (homework beats BS every time was my slogan).

I redirected the conversation, telling them that I had a way that I could agree to what they wanted. Westward between Havre and Summit, the heaviest trains operate at about 25 mph. The lightest operate at about 50 mph. Eastward, the heaviest trains operate at about 50 mph and the lightest at about 60 mph. It seemed that the curves were over elevated for the westward trains. I told BNSF that WSDOT could agree to reducing the superelevation between Seattle and Portland provided that BNSF remove the excessive superelevation between Havre and Summit.

No! That would affect our intermodal traffic! How could you know that?

Oh, you guys must be new here. I was working the Havre West dispatching district in 1979 and 80.

One would have needed a radiation suit for the response. I won. The Coast Starlight still runs at the same speed it always have and the Talgo train run faster.

frictional drag.

that "tree" above the 4247 is either a cell tower or a giant bottlebrush!  (But the one above the first container on the double-stack train is definitely a good ol-fashioned biological tree..)

This running feud between PhotoBob and Mr Winslow may be creating all sorts of bad blood between them but it's sure generating a lot of wonderful new photos from both parties.. Keep it up, boys!

Don I wouldn't get to close to that tree with your pacemaker. We have cell towers up here that are in the shape of a giant cactus.

I don't typically insert myself into threads, especially between the Esteemed Duo of PhotoBob and Mr. Winslow, but I have to admit that I am most curious as to the composition of the image with the "DIP" sign prominent in the bottom right corner...

Surprised no one else (publicly at least) noticed it.

So True Out!  Driving on the 202 and Val Vista (I think) there is a Pine Tree North of the 202 that just looks so out of place.... In a Desert!

That's a cell tower. Stands out like a sore thumb. Perfect for  PhotoBob cuz it's so ugly : >)

> That sign is on Swarthout Canyon Road which is just over the berm so ya can't see it. I was thinking about adding a word to the bottom but it would probably get me kicked off of here. Also there's no bad blood here. We just mess with each other as we've known each other for quite a while
