Western Railroad Discussion > ST&E 678 farewellDate: 02/15/20 20:11 ST&E 678 farewell Author: Valleyman This is to add to a post from the Nostalgia & History board today. The ST&E 678 has departed Stockton, CA for its return to Pennsylvania! I believe it’s going to the Reading Historical Society, where it well be restored to its as delivered paint scheme. Others may be able to add more on this? The first photo shows the unit preparing to depart the BNSF yard in Stockton, CA today for its long journey home. Photo two shows the unit posing in front of the ST&E round house in better times. The 3rd photo shows the replacement for the the 678.

Date: 02/15/20 21:52 Re: ST&E 678 farewell Author: GRNDMND Thanks! I had no idea it was still around and here it is about to leave. Interesting that I posted it on the Nostalgia board today. As for it's replacement...
no comparison! Even the other, newer SW looks better than that beast. But that's "progress in California". KC Date: 02/15/20 23:52 Re: ST&E 678 farewell Author: krm152 Looks to me like #678 will be greatly missed by ST&E operating personnel.
ALLEN Date: 02/16/20 05:55 Re: ST&E 678 farewell Author: RDG485 Many, many thanks to the folks at the ST&E and Omnitrax for their help in making this happen. It will be restored to its as-delivered livery and then displayed at the RCT&HS's Reading Railroad Heritage Museum in Hamburg, PA. For now, any images that any of you could capture and post as it makes its way home would be greatly appreciated.

Will the train it's on have a speed restriction all the way across the country, or have they "disconnected" the traction motors?

It's not the traction motors that limits the max speed, it's those AAR Type A switcher trucks.
