Superior doesn't always mean Better
Author: funnelfan

Some 40 trains a day still crawl up and down serpentine route laid out in 1881 by a overworked NP chief engineer. While the .8% climb out the Lind Coulee now has double track to help mitigate the congestion caused by slow moving trains, it's still a rare moment when the coulees on either side of Providence Hill are not rumbling to the sound of steel wheels on steel rail. Meanwhile the grade of the Milwaukee Road, which benefited from decades' worth of advances in engineering and construction methods, lays in ruin. Unable to overcome the challenge of finance and regulations that eventually doomed it's superior construction.

BNSF probably should have transferred their route to the old MILW route--easier climb out of Seattle, better grades, and as seen here, less curves.  It's hard to understand why they didn't do it.  I know it was talked about, but then nothing happened.

And there is now at least one former BN executive who now says his biggest regret in his career was pulling up the SP&S Third District, Pasco to Spokane.

Also, Robert Downing was retired by the time that happened, but he is reported to have been in disbelief when he heard it.

For those of you unfamiliar with the area, the big sweeping curve seen below in the valley is the old MILW right of way. The MILW right of way is heading west as it leaves the frame at the top.
