BNSF 518 hanging out in So Cal for the moment
Author: MrMRL

Seen (very) recently around BNSF's Commerce Diesel Service facility in Commerce, CA just a couple miles east of Hobart Yard. Not sure if there are plans to keep it around. The remote control hardware onboard is incompatible with existing operations in Los Angeles.

Caught BNSF 7695 (yellow swoosh) by surprise as well on Saturday, before departure for Chicago, IL...

* I made a half-a$$ed attempt at cleaning off a couple of the letters as well (S & F), to aid my fellow railfans down the road...

Interresting that in the first two pictures it
looks like the locomotive is in a "rose garden"
not an engine facility.

Great photos, Robbie.

Yes, where were the first 2 pics taken at Commerce, a spur track somewhere at the facility?

Believe it's the stem of the short sharp wye at Commerce diesel. How soon the memory fades.

Yep, top of the "Wye" at Commerce Diesel, also referred to as "The Straight Track". It's the only place you can potentially get a nice south facing shot.

MrMRL, do know how many BNSF B40-8W units have been rebuilt and repainted? Nice catch in the
Los Angeles area.

Nevermind. I found the answer in an earlier post:

Only 563 and 570.

35 of the 58 were overhauled in 2017 and 2018.

Weird seeing beacons on a model that has never had them.
Thanks for the photos.

Well, it's remote control equipped these days, if you have the right toys to make it work.

New plow installed on 518.  Guess its days of hump yard service are over.

Soon after those gawd-awful 500s started showing up on my end of the RR, we were all "trained" and "qualified"  on the new Canac RCO systems they use and they were deployed in RCO service. Terrible switch engines but someone on Ft. Worth made the call so here we are. Good luck with them. All piles of sheet.

We won't be using them in remote (if they even hang around). They're not setup for So Cal's GE CCB-26 remote system anyway.

Worst engines I've ever run; absolutely useless.

Every time I got one of those 100's or 500's in the lead I wished that they would dig a great big hole and run all of them into it one by one and cover it up.
