New UP T4 Geeps
Author: SCUfoamer

A couple of you have reached out asking about the pair of T4 Geeps that switch the local jobs out of Warm Springs Yard. Heres a  3-pack of the couple.

FizzBoy -

Electro Motive model designation is EMD24B which UPRR is classing as GP22T4 (note on the 5th photo; posted here by SCUFoamer, the "GP22T4" class designation stenciled on the cab). Core units are EMD GP38-2’s. The rebuilt/repowered units are each powered by a Tier 4 compliant V-12 CATERPILLAR 3512D HD Industrial Diesel prime mover with a Kato alternator, rebuilt D78 traction motors, are rated at 2,000 hp and use urea. The conversions are done by Progress Rail; a subsidiary of Caterpillar, Inc, at their facility in Patterson,GA.

Urea is used for the exhaust after-treatment system.  They are fueled be good old-fashioned low sulfur diesel fuel.

Harbor Hog -

Thanks for spotting my typo, and giving me the "heads up" that I messed up the copy-and-paste job LOL. I wanted to post: "...powered by a Tier 4 compliant V-12 CATERPILLAR 3512D HD Industrial Diesel prime mover with a Kato alternator, rebuilt D78 traction motors, are rated at 2,000 hp and use urea".

Were all photos taken in San Jose and the Winchester branch?

Great catch and coverage,

Thanks! All images except #3 are taken along the Vasona Branch. Image number three is an industrial spur in South Gilroy.

That 3512 with Kato alternator is a rugged combination.  They should get good performance with that duo.

Progress Rail website says its constructed with a new crashworthy underframe, cab and fuel tank. And refurbished Trucks and traction motors, Were the UP ones actually put on GP frames?

Pshaww, the 3500s in locomotives have a very checkered past, hope these work better than the last 20 or so.

Cat/Kato combinations have NEVER found any success in the railroad market. What makes this one different?
