Tehachapi Live Cam/YouTube
Author: HardYellow

Any of you here visit the Tehachapi Live Cams on You Tube? I was reading some of the chatroom post…I might say, lots of miss-information. I tried to post to the chatroom with no luck. The post shows up, but no one except I can see it. We I return, the post has vanished. I have read that many others have this same issue with You Tube. Any suggestions here as to what’s wrong? I can’t fine anything in my setting that would cause the problem.

Why bother? I would have to say about 75% of the posts I see on YouTube and FacePlant are in one or more of the following categories:
  • False information
  • False rumors
  • innuendo
  • Fear mongering
  • political rhetoric
  • Hate mongering
  • judgemental

  • No doubt true...but I would still like to find out what the problem is with YouTube. It's not just the Tehachapi Live Cam, It's any chat on You Tube.

Are you logged in with a Google / YouTube account? if not, log in and perhaps that'll work.

Update: Is there a chance you were booted off the Tehachapi cam by the moderators? I don't know how they are but the Virtual Railfan group will ban people just because they may not like what you say and they don't tell you they did it, your posts just don't show up anymore. That's all I'll say about VR because I have nothing good to say about that group.

I visit the Tehachapi webcams frwequently, and one of the things that I noticed for the past 3 days is that when I revisit the cam after being away for, say 3-4 hours, it's logged out.and I see a message saying "An error occured, please try again later...".  Never ran into that before.

That might be. All I can think of is, I mentioned the white cross at the top of the hill at Walong and Duffy Street in the same post. Maybe the word "cross" offended someone there.

Most of the mods on the cams aren't really knowledgeable most of the time. And the Foamers on it mostly spread false info

Yes I agree.

For one thing there are too many blue wrenchers on there. The morning crew ("Molly" and friends, plus "Dsle Dave") are pretty good. The others are bad to just plain horrible. The blue wrenchers also chat amongst themselves way too much and it gets very annoying after awhile. I hope a few of them read this...

I tried to contact Molly, who is a modorator, with no luck. You would think they would tell you... if one was ban.

If they don't like what you're saying (for whatever reason) they will just "ghost" you - that is, all your posts will appear on the chat board on YOUR computer only, and to the rest of the world you will be completely invisible - it's a "secret banishment". They won't warn you, they won't tell you they're doing it (let alone why), they will just ghost you. (Which is completely dishonest and rude, in my humble opinion). And no, it's not necessarily because of foul language or inapproriate conversation: I've seen the chat run off to talk about all sorts of totally unrelated garbage, and the moderators do nothing to rein it in (or even participate in it themselves). It's totally arbitrary.

I enjoyed watching the trains run around the Loop for a while, but then it seemed to me that nearly every time a train arrived in the loop, a moderator would zoooooooom the camera waaaaaaay in and follow the power -- definitely a "can't see the forest for the trees" situation. Seems pretty silly - they went to all this trouble to put a camera up that depicts one of the most famous, scenic, and awe-inspiring sections of railroad in the world, yet when a train comes they're more interested in counting the rivets on the engines, and all you see is the locomotives and nothing more. The camera could just as well be watching the front-end of trains in Bakersfield, or Nebraska.

All in all, I found it mostly a terrible waste of a great idea.

I didn’t think I would be responding to this thread but changed my mind.

For those of you that do not know, Tehachapi Live Train Cams (TLTC) is not a business and is in no way affiliated with VR. My wife and I simply put up a cam at our residence (cable cam) to share the view of the tracks with my family in LA and it escalated from there. Our viewers have donated all funds for upgrades and new cam locations. We do not put this money in our pockets, it is all put back into the TLTC cams. We do not charge or have subscription rules, it is a hobby for us and an honor to work with our donors in order to provide what we can to the railfanning world.

Unless you have a YouTube channel, you may or may not know just how many users come on to the chat with crazy agendas. Religious, political, soliciting porn, selling product or services...there are all kinds of reasons and there are hundreds that get banned or as some here would like to say “ghosted”. We (TLTC mods) don’t ban users unless we believe there is a hidden agenda, or anything that we believe would cause disruption to our family friendly chat of all ages. Any comment that may have a negative impact on the chat is usually deleted, and the user is then timed out or banned. Unfortunately that is the way it has to be to keep our chats from users with ill intentions.

As for the amount of mods we have, you may notice that the depot cam is kind of the “hang out” chatting stream. We have mods that cover all hours of the day and night on all 3 cams, sometimes there is an overlapping and we do have a lot of them on, but that shouldn’t be cause for others to not chat. We have formed strong bonds with our mods and our viewers, and sometimes that is very evident in the chats, but we certainly welcome everyone to chat with us. Our mods are awesome people who give their time and efforts and incredible knowledge to the TLTC chats. And yes, the chat is not always train related, and we do like it that way as we get to know each other personally along with all of our viewers that join in to our chats.

Regarding the cam movements, we have a huge array of views on the cams, with miles of tracks to be seen! Sometimes a mod will zoom and sometimes they will pan and sometimes they will pull out and show miles and one time. It varies always with the mod operating the cam. To have mods that also operate the cams to show that entire area in various ways to our viewers all over the world is nothing less than amazing!!

We have over 11,000 subscribers at TLTC and those viewers are the only ones that have “subscribed” which is an incredibly small percentage of those that view. With that said, there will always be those that don’t like TLTC and those that do. To say that the Loop cam is “a terrible waste of a great idea” floors me and always reminds me that there is no way to ever please everyone!

Thanks for your time and thanks for viewing and supporting TLTC and it’s ongoing efforts to provide coverage of the entire Tehachapi pass to the world.

Personally, I rarely watch any rail-cam but I do like, and occasionally watch, your Tehachapi cams. I thank you for the effort.

I cannot imagine the logistics involved to set these cams up, I cannot imagine the expense to operate them, but unfortunately I do realize that having something like this open to anybody for comments opens up all kinds of issues to avoid personal agendas not rail related, or even inappropriate topics, to arise.
