BNSF Stockton Sub Trains
Author: MikeRail

Hey everyone,

Im looking to do some railfanning along the BNSF Stockton Sub and not having much luck in finding a list of road trains and locals for it. I have caught the RICBAR and L-Ric. However not had much luck with anything else. Looking for symbols, numbers, on duty times that sort of thing.

Would anyone out here have more info?

Thanks for the help!

I find they run after and between the Amtraks, sometimes in quick succession. Lots of great places to go out there too. Have seen as many as 10 BNSF trains during daylight , however this isn't the norm. Been skunked a few times too. Towards the end of week gets busier.

Where on the Stockton Sub? It's 193 miles long and not all trains traverse the entire sub. In fact, most don't. Many trains originate or terminate at Mormon or Stockton Intermodal. Many I-5 trains are coming off or going onto the UP at Keddie Jct, including the Sacramento Local out of Mormon. Locals only cover a portion of the sub as well, so it matters where you are.

I've asked these questions several times before with limited response. The following is what I have gleaned from several sources. The long pool is Richmond (North Bay)-Bakersfield for the Z trains. There is still a Richmond-Calwa pool for the BARRIC/RICBAR and Richmond Calwa trains when they run one. There is generally a vehicle train each way per day with the same pool. Not sure how many Z trains to North Bay, but there seems to be a frequent, very short  ZALTNBY (Aliance, TX-North Bay) which arrives midmorning as well as the daily Willow Spring trains..
Of course there are more trains East of Mormon yard in Stockton, including a STOBAR/BARSTO manifest and  a Stockton-Willow Springs Z train. The Stockton-Bakersfield pool handles these trains as well as the two Inside Gateway manifest BARVAC Barstow-Vancouver, WA and BARPAS Barstow-Pasco and their counterparts. There is also a Bakersfield train several days a week as well.
Not sure about trains to the OIG (Oakland International Gateway) at the Port of Oakland which seem to run less than daily.
Hope this helps a bit.....corrections are welcome.

Q ALTRIC Su
Q CHISTO Mo, We-Fr
Q CLORIC Mo-Th
Q MEMRIC Su, We, Fr
Q RICCHI Fr, Sa

Z WSPNBY Fr-We
Z WSPSTO Fr-Su, Tu, We

There are about 3 various S-series stack trains a week in or out of Oakland.

There’s about 6-8 baretable trains a week to various destinations.  Most originate at Oakland and North Bay but some come out of Seattle via Stockton.

•autorack
There are about 5 trains a week.  Eastbound trains out of Richmond can run to various destinations.  Most westbound trains to Richmond have been originating at Vaughan or Clovis, NM.

•manifest (most run a daily or near-daily basis)
H BARPAS1
H BARRIC1
H BARSTO1
H FRSPAS1
H MODBAR9
H PASFRS1
H RICBAR1

•unit trains
There are several unit trains a day, mostly grain.  The majority of grain trains run via Tehachapi and run to the Bakersfield, Modesto, and Fresno areas.  However, some run the Feather River via Stockton.

See attached map. Road crews go on duty in Richmond and run short pool to Fresno or super pool to Bakersfield. Stockton road is either long pool to Bakersfield or Keddie pool but all crews go on duty at Mormon, even for trains originating at Stockton Intermodal and the MODBAR out of Modesto. We get vanned to those locations from Mormon. Fresno road pool crews run Fresno to Richmond or Fresno to Bakersfield. Bakersfield pool crews run Bakersfield to Fresno (short pool west) or Needles (long pool east). There is also a small crew base at Riverbank for yard jobs only. One local out of Stockton (Sacramento Local), which runs mostly on the UP Fresno Sub, and a number of locals/road switchers that are Richmond crews but some go on duty in Pittsburg. Same at Fresno, a couple locals and road switchers.

Dear Trainjunkie,

Awesome info about train crew movements.

Do you know what the other Roadswitchers and Locals are?
