Black Mesa & Lake Powell Railroad coal hopper 301 preserved

Thanks to the generosity of Salt River Project Navajo Generating Station, Decker Services, and National Salvage, the Black Mesa & Lake Powell Railroad coal hopper No. 301 was preserved in northern Arizona in late March 2020.

SRP was first asked to preserve a car for the Arizona State Railroad Museum Foundation of Williams about five years ago. Due to the August 2019 closure of the Navajo Generating Station and railroad in Page, AZ, the car became available within the past month. This is the first car of the second series of hoppers delivered to the railroad in 1976.  This now sole survivor will "bookend” BM&LP locomotive E60C No. 6001, which was previously donated to the museum foundation in 2009.

The photos depict the loading of the 301 at Page, and unloading at Bellemont, AZ (20 miles east of Williams), on March 26, 2020, where it has temporarily joined eight other cars stored there thanks to the partnership we have with Camp Navajo and the Arizona National Guard.  Work continues, as always, on the museum site along Rodeo Road in Williams, where preparation and coordination with FEMA(USACE) is underway to address drainage issues prior to site preparation. On the map it shows "small gauge railroad".  What gauge?

Interesting that it has a "do not hump" stencil.

Black Mesa and Lake Powell was an isolated railroad...  No humps on the system.  Seems that they could have saved a few $ by skipping that stencil, and making provisions to add it in the future if the car was ever moved onto the US mainline system.

Though, I suppose the cars were not fabricated on-site?  So they would have been manufacured elsewhere, then travelled on the US railroad system to Williams or Flagstaff, and trucked to the BM&LP line?  So I suppose there was the possibility of getting humped while in transit on their way to delivery.

Thanks for sharing,
Ted in UT

While the main gauge will be, the map on the plan for the Musuem shows a loop of track around the grounds clearly marked 'Small Gauge Railroad' not connected with the main trackage.
