"I like mine well done"

BNSF 5245 rounds the corner on Cajon!
Can anyone explain why engines get those markings under the stack?

What I find somewhat amazing is that GE has not figured out a way around this problem. Those "flame-out" units are everywhere!

Slightly older GEs used to have towering flame come out of the stacks on a fairly regular occurrence.  What I am always surprised at is how bad the GE paint is compared with the EMD paint.

But nice pictures.

Leaking fuel lines make fire, and burn paint.

The days of fire out the stack are pretty much over thanks to emmissions.  Back in the day a worn govenor or leaky injector would make for quite a show.  Especially if the engine was by itself and working hard.
