Cruising through Bagdad ghostown on the Needles Sub.
Author: DonWinslow

An interesting place in eastern California on old Highway 66. Once a thriving town with hotels, cafes, businesses and homes. It's now a total ghostown but if ya know where to look one can still find traces of the old town. Foundations, loading dock, still an active siding and an old cemetery are still there.  The old Bagdad Cafe was a famous stop for travelers and had Saturday night dances and the only juke box for miles around. This train is eastbound at the west side of town.

Wasn't the Bagdad Cafe in a bunch of movies? And I think Huell Howser visited it in one of his shows from the 90's if I'm not mistaken.

Are there still signs of the house you were born in?

Thanks for the pic Don. I really wanted to get down there before things got too hot this year but now it sounds like it will have to be in the fall instead.

The Bagdad Cafe of tv\movie fame wasn't ever in Bagdad, CA. It is in Newberry Springs. What was left of the town of Bagdad was removed in 1991.

Also for a good laugh and a whole lot of "say what?" moments,  watch the below YT.

I've been out there many times but a couple of years ago there was a guy with a metal detector and he was finding coins and even a few old tin cans from one of the hotels with their name on them. I may have it wrong but I think t was a Harvey House.  I did talk to a CHP officer who was stationed out there when it was still a small town. Very interesting stories from him.

Nope. They tore it down and moved it to Dunsmuir just to haunt you.

It's a picture of a "G" grade signal, and everyone knows the desert is flat!

Don't know if they do it anymore, but back in the 80s the Marine Corps would unload their armored vehicles on the loading dock spurs at Bagdad for maneuvers around Twentynine Palms.

If you know where the trash dumps were, you can find may treasures from the past. Same if you can find where the out houses were. What ever fell in was rarely retrived.

And indeed, just across the street from Bob, is Dunsmuir's own haunted house.  Read "The Mortician's Wife" by Maralee Lowder, the fictional history of The Mortuary House on Sacramento Avenue.
