A few months ago the former U.P. 2921 turned up missing from the BSVRR, yesterday they announced the arrival of the replacement locomotive. Apparently they traded the 2921 to MWLX for this GP9. Perhaps they decided the 2921 was more locomotive than they needed. Below is the text of the announcement.



"Recently, the B&SVRR acquired this EMD GP-9 low nose diesel locomotive. It formerly ran on the Minneapolis & St. Louis Railroad, Chicago & North Western, Wisconsin & Southern, and other railroads. You can expect to see this locomotive running often this year at the B&SVRR. BSV 751 Start Up, Idle, and Horn."

A GP9 for a SD40-2 seems like a fine trade for a tourist line!

to be fair the tunnel motor they had was probably more then they needed. plus they never ran it.

It really looked out of place.

From what I have been told the reasons the 2921 sat static was because they had to get the bass creek bridge inspected for its weight. It also needed batteries in the worst way. They would spend a week charging them and they wouldn't last long enough to get it started. They had considered putting in an air start but obviously never did.

While the Boone and Scenic Valley is a tourist line, it is also a museum, and an ex-M&StL/CNW GP9 has a lot more historical significance for them than an ex-SP tunnel motor does, no offense to SP purists here.  I'll have to get over and see it.  Does anyone have a photo?

The sd40 would’ve been on the ground on their track more often than a geep.

Given the heritage of the GP9, I would say this was a great move on Boone's part.   Hopefully at some point they can back date the GP9 to replace the high nose, reactivate the dynamic brake, and repaint it in the M&StL red paint it was delivered in.   

Here is the CNW 4304 at Fort Dodge, Iowa in June of 1974.
