Musing trackside

Sitting here in Manteca practicing social distancing and a long U P train pass by with a long string of brand new clean reefers with Union Pacific cold connect painted on the side. With U P permanently closing cold connect what a waste of money. Who in the hell is running this outfit these days. I guess these cars will either go into long term storage are maybe BNSF will buy Them with all the new perishable business they are about to pick up.

BNSF reefer traffic over Tehachapi has been heavy for the last few days.

With vegetables being seasonal I wonder if UP"s  PSR doesn't want seasonal goods since it doesn't provide  constant shipping for a  proper OR return?

Look like someone should have had the foresite to cancel the order of all those new reefers. Those things run about 100k apiece. And the old days somebody's ass would have got fired.

UP closed the dedicated Cold Connect but the reefers are still in use being PSR's into other trains.

The new reefers were ordered specifically for the onion and potato shippers in the PNW. The was a long article in several newspapers about this.
