Western Railroad Discussion > Continuation of KRL 3600 LOAD ( 36 axle - Schnabel Car )Date: 06/27/20 16:13 Continuation of KRL 3600 LOAD ( 36 axle - Schnabel Car ) Author: schnabelguy KRL 3600 delivered the 770 TON nuclear reactor from SONGS in Southern Cal. to Arrolime / Apex, NV.
The reactor was unloaded > loaded to a 130' long, 21' wide ( double wide ) Goldhofer hydraulic platform trailer that has 24 axles x 16 tires per axle = 384 ! TIRES. There are 2 prime mover tractors in front pulling the trailer and 4 heavy duty tractors in the rear pushing. plus the trailer has a hydraulic ADDrive system... They will depart next week from Apex via, 93, 318, 6, ELY, 93, 93A Wendover, Clive, UT. . . I'd be interested in seeing more as it heads north through Nevada and into Utah.
The SONGS load is a reactor pressure vessel, not a nuclear reactor. The RPV is the container for the coolant, reactor core, and core shroud. The RPV is from SONGS 1, the first nuclear generating station built at that location. It was decommissioned beginning in late 1992 and has sat at the San Onofre site since that time. If an interior tire went flat, is there an easy way to deal with it, or do you change it out when the load is gone?

It's a dirty nasty job. Normally during highway running it's the outside rights that catch the brunt due to debris on the shoulder. Hope the road this rig travels on has no sharpe turns.
