A Saturday between Waterloo and Dubuque Iowa
Author: kjangel

I spent Saturday June 27th with friends rail-fanning between Waterloo Iowa and Dubuque Iowa.

1 Iowa Northern 3805 and other IANR  locomotives sit in the Waterloo Yard Saturday Morning.

2. CN 3244 is just east of the CN Waterloo Yard on the CN Dubuque sub taking train 338 eastbound.

3. CN 3244 continues running eastbound. Lots of hogback hills on this subdivision.  The CN Dubuque sub runs from East Jct (MP 115.1 - Freeport Illinois) to Hilltop (MP 272 - Waterloo Iowa)

4. An overhead bridge shows Beth (MP 240.2).  This short siding (on a hill) has been removed and can be found between Independence Iowa and Manchester Iowa.

5. CP trains run on CN track in Dubuque Iowa from Wood (MP 184.4) to Dubuque Jct (MP 182.8).  Northbound CP 7037 passes CN 5477 at the CN yard office in Dubuque Iowa.

6.  CN 5459 is departing Dubuque Iowa westbound.  The train is the westbound local (L565, I think) and is shot from Rockdale Road overpass in Dubuque Iowa.

7. CN 5459 continues west on the Dubuque Sub.

8. A typical Iowa sceen.

9. CN 5459 is slowing as it transitions through a "S" curve.  The local will pickup three empty center beam cars in Delaware Iowa.

10. As the Saturday sun sets on the cornfields of Iowa, (low light), the train with engines CN 5459, CN 5444 & CN 4929 continues west, just west of Delaware Iowa.

Hope you enjoyed.

Great set of photos.  Who would have thought that after all the mergers and buyouts that Illinois Central and Milwaukee Road mainlines in Iowa would become such a showcase for the two major transcon railroads of Canada?

Thanks for sharing. My attention is drawn to photo 6. Always thought that curvy climb westbound out of Dubuque would make for a great photo, but did not follow through. Glad you did.
