Western Railroad Discussion > Chasing a SPatchDate: 06/29/20 07:01 Chasing a SPatch Author: santafe199 A tip from “mg8711” got me out on the chase a little earlier than expected yesterday. One of the few remaining SP patch jobs was pointing a train down the GSR. I had planned to go down to the Flint Hills for another DT report anyway, and we settled right into our usual “tag-team’ chasing. But we had a third visitor along for the ride. That much-ballyhooed Saharan dust thing finally arrived with a complete thud. All it did was make an otherwise sunny day look like pre-EPA smog in a large city. Combine that with a badly faded SP bloody nose and… well, you get the idea.
1. Here comes UP train MDMHN with SPatch unit 6290 leading at Paxico, KS… 2. …at Alta Vista, KS, and… 3. …again at Dwight, KS. Our tiny little visitors, those Saharan dust particles turned a sunny, green day in June into a blasé event. And that promised spectacular sunset was AWOL... (3 photos taken June 28, 2020) Thanks for the tip! Lance Garrels santafe199 Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 06/29/20 07:10 by santafe199. Yeah, I did notice that. And I probably should have tried to get a single shot of it somewhere. But I really don't care for nose-coupled, "flying wastuh" shots, as we in the KS Gang used to call them. I guess it just wasn't enough of a draw, so I just couldn't pull the trigger... It is the only SD60M currently in service on the UP. For quite a while it was hiding out while working on the Alton & Southern, but for the last several months it has been back working on the UP proper. Kind of shocked they didn't just immediately store it when it returned.

Surprisingly they just did all of that on the Alton & Southern right before they send it back to the UP. It is good to go until it's next quarterly in August.
