While the locomotive maintenance/restoration activities continue here at OERM (SCRM) attention is being paid to the track facilities around the carbarn.  The Ruffalo Carbarn has become one of the busiest locations at the museum. The carbarn was actually built for storage of vintage equipment  When built, it served that purpose for several years until the metal thieves invaded the property. The theft of crucial wiring disabled the UP #942 and the SP #3100 and cost the the museum several thousand dollars to restore. The decision was made to move the SP 1006, SP 3100, SP 1474, and UP 942 into the the carbarn. As more equipment was moved to the back of the museum, the leads to the Carbarn 7 became clogged with other equipment making testing the ,locomotives difficult.
     In order to relieve the the leads from equipment storage, the museum has begun to add four more storage tracks next to the Carbarn. Carl and Fred over the past weeks have positioned three of the four switches, mostly constructed by Phil, in place for this work! The photos show this progress.

I have found about 1/2 mile of track in total and have passed along the location information to the powers at be in the Museum. The rail is 75 lb rail SP and one 90 lb #8 turn out w/ 16'6" points self guarded frog, less stand. In one other location not far from the 1st location,  there is about 3 miles of rail and a dozen or more industrial switches SF with 11' points. The rail is 112 lb. If the museum can get the green light to remove the rail and associated hardware and ties.  We the museum will need help from museum volunteers. This will be a big job and need body's.  All of the rail is in Southern California.

Is this right of way owned by BNSF? Is this part of the old ATSF main line to National City?

The OERM/SCRM mainline is the original California Southern, 
later ATSF, mainline from National City to Barstow!

Was this line ever connected to the spur that runs to the gravel company in El Cerrito?

I went back out today and looked over the Diamond and also found that two of the switches are #8 and also have 16'6" points which are 112 lb rail, on the SF  the location is in the South bay area. 16' 6" points are what are really needed at the museum.

That looks like a good track job with many good pieces.

But, as time has gone on, we've all gotten old, and at 84, I for one just not up to it anymore.
We've had a lot of good track jobs in the past.
It takes a lot of coordination to pull it off.
