Western Railroad Discussion > Freight on the Peninsula (San Francisco to Redwood City)

PSR-induced changes to UP operations in the broad strokes: South City Switcher and Broadway abolished. New local instituted that runs MWF to Redwood City and Tu and Th north to San Francisco. Mission Bay now runs out of Warm Springs over the Warm Springs sub and up the peninsula in the early evening. They run to either Redwood City or South San Francisco. Often the local will leave its Redwood City pulls at the Redwood City yard and head back to South San Francisco light engines. 

1: the Mission Bay's train spotted where it's train used to be spotted by the switcher. The switcher pulls cars out of here from the San Bruno end of the yard
2: the local getting to work, running under the signal bridge that is not long for this world
3: Headed down to the Airport Blvd underpass to make up their train for Redwood City

4: South San Francisco industrial park no longer sees trains as this view of the entrance ot the park shows
5: up by CP Sierra ready to shove onto the main
6: after pulling into Redwood City yard, they quickly shove onto Chestnut St. through this private ROW alley

7:Hectic Chestnut St. 
8: Arriving at the runaround track at the Port. They'll drop some tank cars here and then switch Cemex
9: Inside the Cemex facility

11: Heading back to Redwood City yard 
12: About to come onto Chestnut St. with 101 overcrossing behind them

Here's a view of the San Francisco Bay Railway yard. The tallow processor has started shipping by rail again after a long hiatus.

Are they still hauling dirty dir from Hunters point. 
 

Cool shots. I researched it some time ago, and I think UP 1131 is the only one of that first batch of SP 9600 GP60s to retain its nose light. (There might have been one other, but I don't think so.) An unusual find for sure.

UP 1131, originally SP 9606
UP 1064, originally SP 9607

SP 9606 in the use for which it was purchased

Nice work. I like the BW and the last one at the South SF RR that handles the dirt. I need to get up there and shoot it one of these days. 

Nice series! Is the DRGW caboose still at South City?

Thanks! I think they run early in the morning. Used to see them in the afternoons 2014-15 but I don't think that happens anymore.

Thanks! Yes still there. I passed a shot of them moving it around the yard, thinking they would be taking it with to Redwood City but unfortunately no. Darn!

How did UP decide on the new numbers? I would think they would be consecutively numbered.

Ever since the UP-SP merger, UP has struggled to free-up large enough blocks of four-digit road numbers to put all of one model in a continuous series.  Units get renumbered out of sequence when their sequential number in the new series is still occupied by another locomotive waiting to be renumbered to its new series, or to fill gaps left by wreck retirements.  The 1000's and 1100's were occupied by SW1500's and GP38-2's before the GP60's got to them, and it's their third number series since the merger.

What is that monstrosity being built in the background in downtown SSF?

Great set of photos.  B&W is a good way to deal with the harsh summer shadows.

Appears to be apartments to me.

Apartment building going up between the railroad and Airport Blvd. There has been a lot of tall apartment buildings going up around the station on the west side of the tracks over past few years. Really changed the skyline of SSF.
