Downtown San Diego July 1
Author: erielackawanna

Headed down to San Diego to shoot Coaster F40s in sun. The iPhone Weather App assured me it was worth the two-hour trek. Turned out to be in and out clouds, with literally clouds appearing for every Coaster train and leaving when they left. Still got some other trains in light (including a freight that I assume was a H-SDGBAR). Although I haven't been railfanning much, and railfan San Diego very rarely, it's always kind of a blast for me as my grandpa grew up in San Diego and I assume everywhere I go I am walking in his footprints.

First two images are of northbound Coasters 655 and 657, of course in clouds. From there I took off to see if I could find the National City job building a Daygo, but instead I found the Daygo already built and waiting at Petco. Shot the Amtrak rescue engine (in gorgous light) at Santa Fe Depot next.

Last two shots are some S70 action at the Gaslamp Quarter station.

Nice shots, Charles.  SDGO sure looks different from my time there in the Navy.

I was born in San Diego and spent the first 33 years of my life there. Now when I go back It's like being on another planet.

Third generation San Diegan! Have seen many changes over the years and going back through
photos from my grandfather, born in Poway just north of San Diego in 1898!
Lots of changes over these years and today San Diego is so overbuilt, especially the downtown area,
its become harder to enjoy chasing trains in the area!
Later worked for SDIV and CZRY, so spent a lot of time working there, back in the 80s worked for the
local CAT dealer in their downtown rental yard and spent a lot of time on many construction sites in downtown
San Diego, including the Convention Center, Horton Plaza Mall, now disappearing and many others jobsites!

I turned 63 the day these photos were taken but currently living and working in the modern ghost town of
Eagle Mountain, CA! Working on a mine reclamation project at the old Kaiser Steel Iron Ore Mine!

Great photos, thanks for the memories!

Mike

My San Diego grandfather was born in 1898. He was born in Ohio, but was in San Diego by the time he was four or five, and grew up there.
