U.P. Engineering Special making good time near KC
Author: JoCoLB

A Union Pacific Railroad Engineering Special appeared to be making good time Monday morning when I photographed the 10-car train about 16 miles west of Kansas City, Kan., or about 1 mile east of Bonner Springs.

The train had started its day's run at Herington, Kan., after an overnight stay there. After making a left turn at Kansas City, Kan., the train followed the old Missouri Pacific Railroad River Route to Omaha, Neb., and then crossed the Missouri River to reach its home base in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

My understanding is that U.P. President and CEO Lance Fritz was onboard. Today's run to Council Bluffs wound up a long round-trip to the West Coast and back in recent days.

Can anyone identify what those antenna-like parts are on the tops of the engines and cars?

They look a bit like those sensors at traffic lights.

Those are antennas that broadcast the feed from the camera mounted in the cab of the engine to the tv monitors in the train.
