Why didn't the train stop in emergency brake action? That seems close enoght for the engineer to dump the emergency brakes.

No way that train could have stopped going that fast. It would take a mile even in emergency.

Trains can weigh 11 to 30 million pounds,(on average)going at 55 mph how long do you think it takes to stop that much weight?    At least a mile.  Plus, at around 70 degrees F, an emergency application travels at about 900 feet per second back through the train, so if the train is 7,000 feet long,  it will travel 560 feet before the emergency brakes even are fully applied through the whole train.

Congratulations to that officer, and to every first responder who does a great job every day.

Yes, no way the train would have been able to stop, BUT, why didn't the engineer already have the train in emergency? MOST would have? Strange? And, yes, MAJOR kudos to officer AND other first responders for doing their job.

Obvious you have no idea what it like to be in the cab of a speeding train...it is sometimes hard enough to see a vehicle and now you want the crew to be able to spot a wheel chair on the tracks from a half a mile or more away......

Yep!

A second could have made a difference.

I would like to hear what the engineer reported to the dispatcher.

Obvious YOU don't. Spent thirty years in the seat and know what I am talking about. IF he would have hit and killed the person without putting the train in emergency, there would have been major repercussion's in court and MAYBE even charges against him. Freeking armchair engineers.

A couple more seconds and the story would be different. Amazing response by the officer.

Once again, you prove to the world how pathetically arrogant and judgmental you are.

Giving him the benefit of the doubt. No way the train could have come to a compete stop.
I think he worded it wrong.  Think he meant to say how come the train wasn't in emergency and braking to stop.

If the handicapped person and the brave officer had died for a lack of a second ....

Given the video, I'd be surprised if the railroad has not had questions for the engineer.
