A little old school switching at Frannie, WY
Author: robj

Cody local at Frannie, WY - 2 dates in June, 2020

1)  On 6/26 I chased local from Cody to Frannie which is the connection to the BNSF Casper Sub, they are shoving back to the interchange yard on the Casper Sub
They headed back to end of yard and sat so I cut off to do some scouting on the main for the Cowley turn

2-3))  6/29/20  I shot the Cowley Turn out of Greybull, since it was cloudy I figured I could catch the Cody local and chase west.  I got to Frannie as they were shoving back into yard
The are switching out south end of interchange yard at Frannie.

4-5)  More Switching at Frannie, Conductor used hand signals off and on, either I was out of position or too slow but caught one
6)  Returning to Cody  (https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?1,5063446,5063673#msg-5063673)

Great photos Bob. I love to also see the human side of railrading.

While having the caboose is great, it's even better to see somebody actually using hand signs in this day and age!!!

Radio silent makes it very hard for management to monitor you. Not a bad idea.

Funny you mention that because when I was working a yard engine (industry job) we routinely used hand signs as much as possible at my urging just so the managers couldn't listen in to what we were doing.

Yep, EMCON (Emissions Control) isn't just for the military.

About 17 years ago while brand new in this hobby I got waved over to the locomtive by the engineer while they were working Big Horn CO-Op in Powell. He was very polite but he asked me if I was from the railroad or a railfan. I told him I was just a railfan and all was good, but it was first time I connected that my hobby could impact somebody making a living.
This same crew was always friendly going down the road, I lived across 14A (Still two lanes at the time) and anytime I was out in the yard or just walking from the truck I always got a wave from the whole crew.
