Western Railroad Discussion > Meet at the Really Big Hole (Donner)Date: 10/15/20 15:05 Meet at the Really Big Hole (Donner) Author: BoilingMan Photo 1. A pair of UP Snow Service GP38's waiting at Tunnel 41. (a bit odd to see these GP's wandering around- they're normally snow service only)
Photo 2. Out comes the West Bound. Photo 3. Returning the Little Beastie. Photo 4. There are still pockets of heavy smoke in California (luckily quite localized) Photo 5. With the WB by, the GP's get a Clear(ish) signal and dive in. It just seems odd to see them out right now on an 80deg day with no moisture in sight. The crew is already beyond the signal is not seeing what we’re seeing. SR Date: 10/15/20 18:09 Re: Meet at the Really Big Hole (Donner) Author: Betsy Really like the overhead shot! Fall was alway my favorite season when I lived on the Hill, sunny days with deep blue skies, cool nights. But 82 degrees seems a bit unusually warm for that elevation in mid-October.
Elizabeth Date: 10/15/20 18:22 Re: Meet at the Really Big Hole (Donner) Author: BoilingMan Thanks, Liz. I was late launching the drone- it was having trouble staying in contact with the controller and won’t fly unless it’s satisfied the signal is solid. So it was kind of a rushed shot- I barely got the head end in the frame! But I really wanted to record those GP’s in the hole, a very unique situation.
I think the issue was all the power lines at 41. The place has a rat’s nest of wire going in every direction! I can’t even guess at the inherit interface. Looks like work train duty to me.
