Western Railroad Discussion > Looking for Boxcars in Fields Out West

Hello!  I am interested in documenting (via photos) some of the old, rusted, and seemingly random boxcars and other rail equipment that can be found out west on farms, in fields, etc.  I have an upcomiong trip between Kansas City and southwest TX and would like to "take the long way" to visit any equipment of which I am made aware prior to my departure.

If you are aware of the general location of railcars like this anywhere between Kansas City and roughly the TX / Mexico border, I'd like to hear from you.  Feel free to post or DM me with whatever details you might have about them.  I don't need car numbers or anything like that; location information is just fine.  Something like "it will be on your right when you're headed west on Route 267," or "you can see it from the road just a little west of Springfield" is great.

May not be on your travels- but saw plenty this past winter near Vaughn, NM and Clovis,NM. Believe I was on HWY67 (whichever hwy parallels the Transcon)

Yes I was going to say the same. There are a lot along the Santa Fe. Helps if you have an passenger who can look while you drive.

That Hwy is US60.

Much appreicated, I was just too dar lazy to research! Must of been 67 going thru KS I took...

1. not a box but neat none the less.  Herford, TX I believe
2. Near Little Sahara State Park in OK
3. Still in the service of the railroad.  Ft Sumner, NM

There are alot out there.  I didnt photogragh that many of them.

There were also alot of elevated hoppers along the Santa Fe in TX.  This one is from La Junta, CO

There are 2 Santa Fe boxcars, early '70's ?, go about 1-3 miles south of Rio Vista,Texas on Texas Highway 174. Be looking on the east side of the highway and railroad tracks that parallel the highway. They are sitting together and visible about 1/4 mile off the highway and I believe there is a side road that goes within 100' of them. Also if interested in Cleburne within view of the Amtrak station there is a Santa Fe caboose just 500' south of what once was a Santa Fe car shop.

There is several in KS. and just keep looking in the fields as you drive. That's what I do when I drive. upkpfan

They are east of KC also, in Baring MO there is a old AT&SF wooden reefer in use as a shed in someone’s back yard

There are also CB&Q and NP boxcars near Great Falls, Montana.

Yup, about one on every other property it seems.  

US 62 west out of Altus, OK to the TX border. There are at least 8-10 different old 40-50' boxcar "farm sheds" visible from the highway on either side. ATSF, NP, Rock Island Blue, I've passed them on multiple ocssions during my spring storm chasing trips.

Four mounted (for feed storage) Santa Fe reefers sit on northeast side of US50/400 in Ingles, KS between Cimarron, KS and Garden City, KS.  Possibly some other Santa Fe relics along the way toward Lamar, CO.  Also, some older cars may be found at Spearville, KS behind the AMPRIDE fuel stop and some in or near the BNSF tracks in or near Dodge City, KS..

And North of there on 283 are a couple interesting examples, as mentioned, they're all over Kansas.

Wow, this is awesome!  I'm not sure how many I'll be able to get through on this trip, but please keep them coming!  It sounds like I may need to swing into NM for a bit, lol.  Thank you all!

To expand on what Dan said, a number of old boxcars, mostly D&RGW can be seen in the San Luis Valley of Colorado, along Hwy 285 coming south from Poncha Springs, and along Hwy 160 erdt of Alamosa.
