freight car Friday Coil car
Author: jefflocal

Caught this neat old BN Coil car heading up the Willamette valley last weekend. It has a build date of 1994 so just  before
it became BNSF. I suppose there are still quite a few running around but I thought it was an interesting catch. Looking at the
load limit on these is kind of an eye opener. 238,000 pounds would be the equivalent of about 3 tractor trailers if I'm not mistaken.
That's a heck of a load for what looks like a fairly small car. I knew those coils were heavy but wow.
               Have a good day,
                Jeff

1994 is old?

Average interstate legal maximum load for steel is 47,000. (based upon truck, trailer and equipment weight)
The rig I used to drive could legally haul 51,900 of steel per interstate regulations. (Specially spec'd for maximum weight payload)

Those short cars are really neat. Saw a train full of them hit the diamonds at Stockton tower once. What a beautiful racket!
