Best Days for Trains in Cajon Pass
Author: OCVarnes

It has been some time since anyone posted about rail traffic through Cajon Pass.

Currently, what are the best days of the week?

It would be great if someone had actual train counts.   I have been up htere on a couple of recent Saturday mornings, and there has been plenty to see

The Hesperia webcam on Virtual Railfan is a great resource.

When I watched the Cajon (Lugo) camera for a week in early June (traffic has picked up), it averaged 2 1/2 trains per hour.  That’s Cajon Sub only, not counting trains via UP’s Mojave Sub.  Sundays and Mondays are usually the slowest days to avoid.

BNSF daily count- Mo 40, Tu 48, We 51, Th 48, Fr 58, Sa 46, Su 44=335, average 48/day.
UP daily count-     Mo  7,  Tu   8, We  9, Th 10, Fr   7, Sa 11, Su   5=  57, average 8/day.
AMTK daily count- 2 per day [now 6 per week?]
total daily count-  Mo 49, Tu 58, We 62, Th 60, Fr 67, Sa 59, Su 51=406, average 58/day.

Any day with a 'y' in it is usually pretty good.

And even on busy days it seems to run in bunches. i.e. no trains for a couple of hours and then 3 in an hour.
