Truxton Flyover Opening
Author: slug96

A pair of ballast trains work on laying the last section of ballast on the new Truxton Flyover on Oct. 25, 2020. After 10 months of construction, the Truxton Flyover is designed to create an easier traffic flow from "right-hand running" to "left-hand running".From Barstow, CA to Truxton, AZ, eastbound trains use main track two (south track) because the grades of Ash Hill, Ibis, and Kingman Canyon. From Truxton to Belen, NM, eastbound trains run on main track one (north track) because of grade separation going over the Continental Divide in New Mexico. As a result of that, the fueling locations in Belen, NM are designed for "left-hand running".Prior to the flyover, trains would have to cross over from one track, to another, via dispatcher controlled switches. This resulted in trains waiting for one of another to clear the switches. With a flyover, it'll create a continuous traffic flow of trains going from main one to main two.

Thanks for looking!

You gotta wonder why BNSF put in a tight S-curve lead up to a right-angle overpass crossing vs. a longer, but straighter diagonal crossing???

You don't think BNSF kind of know what they're doing? Where's the tight s-curvature exactly, I can't see it?

Tel-e-photo smash.  The long telephoto lens makes the curves look much, much sharper then they really are.

Per G.O., the flyover is good for 40mph, this is after coming out of 25 mph Crozier Canyon.  Should not ding freights too bad.

In the other thread someone said the flyover
was around here

https://goo.gl/maps/M1zJX1CJEWJN34eY8

(Note the old right of way north of the east
end of the curve.)

Presumably the eastward grade is increased
by 0.6% or so -- don't recall what the present
grade is.

(Guess the flyover is above the curve at MP 477.3?
http://old.atsfrr.org/Members/Track/1960/Bel-Top-Phoe/Win-Top.pdf
Which suggests the eastward grade is little
if any steeper than 1.42%.)
