UP GP-15 Locomotive Auction
Author: EMDSW-1

UP is disposing of 25 GP15-1 locomotives in East St. Louis on November 5th. Also to be auctioned are 50+ pallets locomotive parts, 8 Cummins QSK19 Gen Sets and 13 GE RCL Kits.

Looks like UP is done with low horsepower units as well as phasing out their their love for gensets in favor of "real" locomotives!

What are they going to use to switch the Metra yards and North Western Station?
I know, they want to exit that business...

The GP15-1 that are being sold have been stored out of service for some time. Some upwards of 5 years. They will bring some decent $$$ at auction as opposed to 6 axle units, so apparently the UP was willing to part with them, as opposed to settling for scrap prices on 6 axle units.

Have seen UP using road units (C44-9's and larger) for transfer runs, and anything larger than a true local.  Locals (the ones that switch industries, not haulers or transfer jobs)  ...mostly GP-60's in Calif that I've seen.  and some SD-70m's.    I guess they still have the GP-40's, 38's, and 15's somewhere..  Lots of 38 and 15's were sold off a while ago...

UPRR is also using SD59Ms on locals in Northern California, mainly out of and near Roseville.

Should be popular with shortlines / grain elevators / etc with the 12 cylinder 645 prime movers.

The Casa Grande (Arizona) local now uses 2x SD-70Ms for their work instead of 2x GP38s or a GP40.

The last time I was up close to a UP GP15-1, it's top coat of paint was flaking off and I could see some nice Jenks Blue reappearing.

The Chino Local (LOB29) was using a GP15-1 sandwiched by a pair of GP40-2's earlier this month, and may still be (UP 1464, UPY 699, UP 1413).  The LOB40 out of Arlington was using GP38-2 663 with GP60 1064 last weekend.

Yeah....instead of looking for customers that would GROW the business and produce sustainability into the future...??!!

No surprise though...other RRs have been dumping the GP15s.

I used to see them around Dolton and Yard Center a lot.  Are those gone now?

What is the advantage of a GP15 over a MP15?  I just compared the tractive effort and the MP15 wins at 48,800 vs the GP15's 47,000.

Possibly because they have room for a toilet which may be required under certain conditions.

MP15s had space for an optional toilet.

Yup, just pulled one out and used the spot for a block heater.
