Western Railroad Discussion > UP GP-15 Locomotive AuctionDate: 10/27/20 10:20 UP GP-15 Locomotive Auction Author: EMDSW-1 UP is disposing of 25 GP15-1 locomotives in East St. Louis on November 5th. Also to be auctioned are 50+ pallets locomotive parts, 8 Cummins QSK19 Gen Sets and 13 GE RCL Kits.
Looks like UP is done with low horsepower units as well as phasing out their their love for gensets in favor of "real" locomotives! Some upwards of 5 years. They will bring some decent $$$ at auction as opposed to 6 axle units, so apparently the UP was willing to part with them, as opposed to settling for scrap prices on 6 axle units.

Locals (the ones that switch industries, not haulers or transfer jobs) ...mostly GP-60's in Calif that I've seen. and some SD-70m's. I guess they still have the GP-40's, 38's, and 15's somewhere.. Lots of 38 and 15's were sold off a while ago...

Should be popular with shortlines / grain elevators / etc with the 12 cylinder 645 prime movers. The Chino Local (LOB29) was using a GP15-1 sandwiched by a pair of GP40-2's earlier this month, and may still be (UP 1464, UPY 699, UP 1413).
