Have yet to see one of these in person. Nice grab. Are these operated by T&E or MoW crews?  Ben

MoW personnel operate them. That's why they have the MoW number and are labeled "Maintenance of Way".

The body shell looks like its from an SD50 or 60 That CP Rail had at one time.

Bet my money that this is a very contentious issue. Probably not alot of very happy T&E guys in regards to the "who operates them, kinda like the RCO Jobs around. Ben

Oh I have no doubt at all that they have done it this way to get around the language in the contract.

MoW personnel may operate it but surely that person is locomotive qualified ?????  Right?      or
Does a regular engineer run the contraption and MoW just operate the equipment on the cars behind?

That piece of MOW equipment is ugly enough to make a freight train take a dirt road. Ironic. Don't you think?

It's good to see CP and UP buy their own material handling work equipment.  Now their own MOW employees can operate them rather than having their work taken by Herzog and Georgetown Rail.

This is becoming an issue with engineers. They have MOW employees operating these just as they do tampers and spreaders.
But are these gentlemen qualified on the operating rules or do the dispatchers have to establish blocks of protection for their movements
like they do with system gangs?

They would be qualified on whatever maintenance of way operating rules UP has in place. If you mean do they operate on signal indication, I would speculate they do not.

One other comment:  If it runs on an SD-40 platform and trucks , sounds like a SD-40 and even has vents looking like it has dynamic brakes, has throtle and brake and board switches, then it is a SD-40 in spite of its dress.  Right?
