NWP lends a helping hand as GP-9E & SP 2472 stretch their legs
Author: weather

Since the move from Niles Canyon, the volunteers of Golden Gate Railroad Museum have concentrated there time on the diesel shop and steam shop inventory. Wedneday marked the first day the time was spent in putting back on items that were taken off during the move.  The engine has parked on track one in the yard at Schellville with limited side clearnace because of the fence. Before leaving for  NWP General Manger  Danylo Hawks and Conductor Ryan Martin coupled onto ex-SP GP-9E #3194 and the ex-SP P-8 #2472 and pulled them out of the Victory Station yard and across E-8th St  crossing to the NWP compound.  The crew than left for Ignacio to retrieve the empties and headed to Napa Jct. to exchange the empties for the loads.  They returned to Schellville around 3:30 pm. During the time they were gone GGRM crew members were putting the main rods back on, the eccentrics, the pins and link rods.  However, after the main rods were put on, the eccentrics and link didn't line up.   With the Lomard turn holding the main, Danylo Hawks climed into the 3194 and with the direction of GGRM site manager Jim Pretyleaf signaled to Engineer Hawks to couple on the the 2472 and move forward enough to get the main rods in a better osition to install the other rods. First Image shows the GGRM Crew working that worked on the 2472.. 2nd image the crew is installing the excentric arms. The video is the movement of the engine back into the Victory Station Yard.   The third image is a hot of the brass bearings on the main rods that have been cleaned by myself before installation,,  Text and Photos by GGRM Member Mike Pechner

As SP 3001, it did work on the commutes.  It started life as T&NO passenger geep 281.

Looks like the crossing has been restored and the grade crossing signals reinstalled since Google street view came through.

It can be 5 years or more between passes by a Google Street View car.

I remember it as the 3001 growing up in the Bay Area. On the week ends the Permanente Local would have passenger geeps or I remember a Trainmast making an appearance. I never saw it as a T&NO geep.

Also when the 3001  was in commute service in the pre Amtrak days it made quite a few trips to Monterey on the Del Monte!

Engineer was actually Margherone, and the train to lombard was trunkated due to some bridge work at Black Point.

Good documentation Mike.

OK, one question, how were they able to pick up the rods? crane or forklift, I can't imagine that crew lifting those without a little assistance! BTW, nice horn too.

Here's an after picture for your before(cleaning) picture. Nice work cleaning them. What sort of lube goes on them? Curious how specialized it is.
