SD40A...Ex IC 6009 GP9 ex DRGW 5903 GP20 ex SP 7210 Date: 11/24/20 21:49 Re: Texas Rosters Author: SD45X SD40 possibly ex SOO 751
SD45 ex SP 9128. Was the dash 2 sight glass a GRIP thing? or added later by MK? GP40 ex B&O 4022 Date: 11/24/20 21:53 Re: Texas Rosters Author: SD45X Then driving around town these were found.
USG gypsum plant had this SD9 Ex CB&Q 436. Think there was another inside but we couldn't go past the gate guard to shoot. Some sort of storage area had this GP7 ex ATSF 2659 And on the line going south at the Interstate overpass was MP15DC ex Frisco 362. and SD45 ex CNW 971 Further north near Jai NM is SD45 ex CNW 956 running modified long hood forward Date: 11/24/20 22:00 Re: Texas Rosters Author: SD45X Date: 11/24/20 22:02 Re: Texas Rosters Author: SD45X And last but not least, SD40 ex WM 7448 also at the Eunice,NM "shop".
Wasn't a bad three day jaunt...More to follow. Date: 11/25/20 03:36 Re: Texas Rosters Author: Txtrainman60 VERY nice selection of models and paint schemes. That ex-South Orient GP9 was one of four that ran on the Dublin sub. ( Now Fort Worth & Western ) right after Santa Fe sold the line. For reasons never known, those four original S,O units didn't last very long. They were replaced with ex-CN&W GP7 junk then the dark blue South Orients showed up.
Date: 11/25/20 06:24 Re: Texas Rosters Author: CNW8531 Nice collection of power. It's always nice as well to see older units rebuilt and working their second life. I especially like the rebuilt SD45 varieties! Hard to believe some of those are ex C&NW! But I like 'em!!
Date: 11/25/20 07:26 Re: Texas Rosters Author: 3rdswitch That's quite the collection of loco's. Lot's to see out there.
JB Date: 11/25/20 08:03 Re: Texas Rosters Author: ntharalson Nice stuff, thanks for posting. I'm guessing the ex-CNW SD45's with their flares removed were rebuilt for the SP and the UP later shed them. I do know that several of the ex-CNW SD45's got dynamic brakes added.

Date: 11/26/20 00:59 Re: Texas Rosters Author: Evan_Werkema WAMX 3537 should be ex-WP 3015.
Date: 11/26/20 02:52 Re: Texas Rosters Author: perklocal You certainly had a great 3 day jaunt ! Nice to see all these old veterans still at work. These are true Heritage units.
Date: 11/26/20 07:59 Re: Texas Rosters Author: rrpreservation Awesome collection of shots!!!
Thanks for sharing them. Date: 11/26/20 10:40 Re: Texas Rosters Author: alcoc636 The oval sight glass window on TXOR 2785 was likely not a GRIP rebuild thing. Later production SD45's (at least the SP ones) came from EMD factory equipped with the sight glass window for easy viewing of the radiator cooling water sight glass.

Here are photos of SP 9128 with its sight glass: http://ncespee.railfan.net/spsd45/sp9128.html http://espee.railfan.net/nonindex/sd45_photos/9128_sp_sd45_dennis_mutulo.jpg The unit never went through the GRIP program. The second photo shows it in storage awaiting retirement, which came in December 1986. MK also never laid a finger on it. It was sold to Precision National, knocked around in rent-a-wreck service for a while, and passed to National Railway Equipment when they bought out Precision. NRE rebuilt it into an "SD40-2" for CIT, which leased it to UP for five years beginning in 1999. It was UP 4735 for a while, then UP 2785, and was turned back at the end of the lease in 2003. It then endured a second round of rent-a-wreck duty, first with CITX reporting marks, then CEFX, then OFOX (Residco, another leasing company). It is now carrying TXOR's reporting marks, but I don't know if it is leased or owned. |
